While he was waiting for a phone call, Spade started to tell him a story that had happened to him many years before. A man named Flitcraft left his house one day to go to his office. However, he never appeared in the office, nor did he return home. He simply disappeared. His wife alerted the police, who retraced his steps and searched for him in different hospitals, but their efforts were futile. After a few years, the wife visited Spade: someone had seen a person resembling her husband in a definite location and she wanted the detective to visit him to put an end to her doubts. Spade went to the designated place and confirmed that, it was indeed Flitcraft who now assumed a different identity. He evaded explaining his reasons for disappearing: walking from his office on that fateful day, Flitcraft walked passed a building under construction. Just seconds after passing, part of the scaffolding fell down. Although he was saved by the skin of his teeth, a piece of metal managed to injure him and left him with a scratch on the head. [...]
